Have you considered using Indeed.com or Juju to search for employment? These sites are great when you want to scan the area to see what is out there from employers. You can register if you like, but it’s not needed to search for jobs. These sites also allow you to know how old a position is, all you to be transferred to the employers website, and you can email it to a friend.
These sites can help narrow or enlarge your search area. For example, if you wanted to look at what positions are available in a 50 mile radius of Charleston, SC it will research only that location. If you wanted to expand your search to all of South Carolina, just put in SC only.
When searching for positions you can be as general or as detailed as you want. If you want to see all the positions that pop up under a specific title be very general: for instance, enter “Customer Service.” But if you know that you are looking for a more specific job category, then narrow your search and enter “help desk” or “call center rep” or “Customer service representative.”
Conversely, if you do decide to narrow your search but do not find any listings, you may want to structure your search more generally. But this also means you may need to consider what other positions you could apply for if the one you would like does not exist right now. For example, You have a background in manufacturing, but no positions are open. You do notice that warehouse and shipping & receiving positions are open. You may want to consider doing some warehouse work to at least be employed for the time being.
